Looking from Europe, Finland is an island. And since we are futurists we are travelling like they do in the future: the low carbon way.
I calculated (using this brand new calc.) the difference between flying to Berlin and taking the cargo-boat as we do. And you’re going to hate the results since traveling by sea destroys your carbon balance by less than half of the massive emissions from flying. Have a look:
The first from left describes emissions from flying to Berlin, the second from taking a traditional cargo ship and train to Berlin, the third a combined container and cruise ship. The fourth and fifth ones describe the route via Sweden – smaller one with train and the one that comes close to flying combined cruise ferry and ones own car.
Shocking! Most shocking I find how little the bloody trains consume energy and emit. Second its shocking how much cars suck.
Now you’re thinking you really don’t have time for the journey. After all it does take a day and a night. You have to work and you have kids and never too much time. Well, our trip is work for some, hobby for others, something in-between for most. Everyone works at the boat. We have workshops and ideations. Thinking and talking. Its perfect for work like that. Also, some of us are travelling with kids. So your argument sort of just disappeared.
